BEAUTY FEVER

Gema Herrerías from A5Farmacia.
Today I had a great day, a fantastic day!! I have to say thank you to Irene Romero from Mi Universo de Belleza because she has organised a fantastic meeting for Beauty Bloggers  called Beauty Fever in its second edition this year. I had an appointment with three friends to spend the day attending to talks related to beauty and visiting stands of different dermopharmaceutical companies.

In the photo, you can see my friend Gema giving a talk on the combination of social media and beauty; Gema is a great expert on social media, she has a great, very informative blog (linked above) and has her own chemist here in Sevilla. You should read her blog because it shows you how important it is to look after our skin.

We did  not have the time to visit all the stands, but we did go to those of Apivita, they work with natural ingredients mainly taken from what the bees produce, great scents!!; Bioderma, in which they explained their best product called Matricium to us; the Carebell one, with fantastic eyebrow make-up and the fantastic Caudalie one with its marvellous frangance which they take from grapes and wine.

In the afternoon, we attended a talk on the concept of beauty, about how it is imposed on us or what is it that makes us feel beautiful and sense beauty around us, really interesting!! After that, we were offered some water and a flat cake with orange and chocolate flavour by Chocolate y limón.

What do you think of my Saturday?
Tell me about your Saturday in the comments!!

Times Square, where there is always light!

Times Square
New York is not all lights as it may seem if you look at Times Square, but once, the Theatre District, where Times Square is, had its lights inside its theatres: great or not so great buildings which housed performances with great artists such as Judy Garland. Nowadays it is illegal not to have lights in the outside of the theatres and walls in Times Square if you want to make an ad there, but there are still great artists performing there. If you want to go to the theatre, you should come to this part of town, especially if it is a musical.

Some photos of the legendary theatres around:

Hudson theatre
Foxwood theatre
Lyceum, the oldest one.

    and many more.....

Near here, we wanted to visit the hotel Le Parker Meridien, because we had been told that there were great hamburgers there, and it is true!! In a luxury hotel, behind a red curtain there is what they call The Joint Burger, a fantastic place, though quite small that has great hamburgers, short of variety. There is so many people, that in order to go faster, they give you a paper with what they have (barely two types of hamburgers and the drinks) so that you tick what you want and hand it to the cashier and wait till you are called by your name. I show the photo of the entrance of the hotel, we kind of got lost :)

To end up the day, since it was Friday afternoon, we visited the MOMA, great museum with activities for kids, you should visit their workshop. I'm leaving you a photo of a part of a picture, do you know what technique is it? My 2nd of ESO students of last year should, leave your comments!!!

Who painted it???

Organising a fashion show (Learning clothes vocabulary)

Online Kids Clothing Store
Clothing Kid
One of the funniest ways to learn vocabulary is to use it in combination with the present continuous form of the verb "to wear" as if the students  in the class were in a fashion show, parents can also do this at home.

In this way , we would have a presenter or two who would say what their mates are wearing, "s/he is wearing..." or only presenting the models and have the models say: "I am wearing..." Remember to use the colours before the clothes items and, for higher levels, the clothes patterns.

It is also fun to prepare this fashion show; they have to decide what clothes would they wear, what the order of the models is, how long do these models have to be on stage... in this way, they use the second language for a communicative purpose and also develop other competences such as learning to learn, social competence, mathematical competence...

You can also find many worksheets and activities on the internet, I leave you some examples I have found which I think suit my students, but there are many more:

Those of my students who send me a commentary describing the children in the picture, will get a reward, so leave your comments!!

FRIDA KAHLO

For my students of 1st of Bachillerato and 4th of ESO,

 WHO WAS SHE?
She was a Mexican painter and artist, born in Coyocoán in 1907. Born in a multicultural big family, her father was a jewish German and her mother was Mexican; she suffered polio and then a strong accident that caused her great pain and over 30 surgeries throughout her life, she represented all this suffering in her paintings. She died very young, at the age of 47.

 WHY IS SHE IMPORTANT?
She was a revolutionary for her time, not leading the life girls were supposed to live then. She married very young to a Mexican muralist called Diego Rivera - 20 years her senior, and had several other relationships both with other men and women; she was also part of the communist party and she had a special view of what feminine beauty was. She is now considered a representative of the surrealist trend.

WHY IS SHE IMPORTANT FOR ME?
In my opinion, getting over all the pain she suffered and being able to do what she needed to do, such as painting, travelling or having a social life makes her a singular woman, apart from her artistic value which is now recognised worldwide.

You can find a portrait of her here among other places

You can have a tour at her house here
